ACTICOAT is a clinically proven, silver-coated antimicrobial barrier dressing from Smith+Nephew, widely used in community and home care settings for NDIS participants with complex wound needs. Utilising patented SILCRYST™ nanocrystalline silver technology, ACTICOAT delivers a sustained, controlled release of silver ions that creates a powerful antimicrobial zone at the wound surface — protecting against bacterial colonisation and supporting optimal healing conditions.

Application Instructions

1. Cleanse the wound area per standard clinical protocol
2. Moisten the dressing with sterile water or saline to activate the silver (do not use oil-based products such as petrolatum)
3. Cut to wound shape if required — all antimicrobial properties are retained
4. Apply directly to the wound surface (either side may face the wound)
5. Secure with an appropriate secondary dressing to maintain a moist environment
6. Re-moisten as needed without removal if the dressing begins to dry
7. Change every 3 days, or per clinical assessment

Precautions

• Do not use in patients with known silver sensitivity
• Remove prior to MRI or radiation therapy; reapply a fresh dressing post-treatment
• Not compatible with oil-based products (e.g. petrolatum)
• Avoid contact with electrodes or conductive gels (e.g. during ECG/EEG)
• Not intended as sole treatment for infected wounds; use in conjunction with local clinical infection management protocols
• Use in premature infants (<37 weeks gestation) only when clinical benefit outweighs risk
